How to publish your first Amazon KDP coloring book with AI in 24 hours

A step-by-step walkthrough from niche pick to live listing — using ColorBook AI, Gemini Nano Banana, and a Kindle Direct Publishing account.

Most "how to sell coloring books on Amazon" guides skip the hard part: actually producing a book that doesn't look like it was stitched together in Microsoft Word. With AI image models that finally understand line art, the production bottleneck is gone. Here's the 24-hour playbook.

Step 1 — Pick a niche that already sells

Don't guess. Open Amazon and search "coloring book kids ages 3-6". Look at the top 10 results. Note which themes appear (farm animals, unicorns, dinosaurs, vehicles). Those are proven buyers.

Cross-check on Pinterest — search the same theme and look at pin saves. If pins hit 1,000+ saves, there's audience demand beyond Amazon.

Our prompt library has 14 pre-validated niches across exactly these proven sellers. Start there if you're new.

Step 2 — Generate 20 pages

Open /generate, pick your category, and click Generate All 20. Three parallel workers hit Gemini Nano Banana and your book is line-arted in about 3 minutes.

Watch for:

  • Stray shading — regenerate any page where Gemini added gray tones
  • Off-subject drift — pages where the cartoon style breaks consistency
  • Weird anatomy — extra limbs, fused eyes, etc. Regenerate.

Target: 20 keepers out of 22-25 generations. The cost of a regen is pennies.

Step 3 — Assemble the KDP-ready PDF

Click KDP PDF in the generator. We assemble an 8.5×11″ interior PDF at 300 DPI with alternating blank pages (single-sided print layout — a feature, not a bug, for markers and crayons that bleed through).

Margins are pre-set to KDP spec: 0.25″ outer, 0.375″ gutter for books under 150 pages.

Step 4 — Design a cover

Use Canva or KDP Cover Creator. Title format that ranks:

> [Theme] Coloring Book for Kids Ages 3-6: 20 Big & Simple Drawings | Single-Sided Pages

Bright flat colors, large title, 2-3 cartoon characters from the book. Keep the spine under 0.1″ for a 40-page interior.

Step 5 — Upload & publish

In KDP:

1. Book Details: paste your SEO title, use a category-matched description template, tick "Not Low Content". 2. Content: upload interior.pdf, upload cover.pdf, preview in the online previewer. 3. Pricing: $6.99 in US, ₹299 in IN, start low. Enable expanded distribution.

Approval: 24-72 hours typically.

Step 6 — Seed traffic on day 1

Don't wait for Amazon's algorithm. On publish day:

  • Post the book to 3-5 Pinterest boards
  • Send to your email list (yes, even if it's 20 people)
  • Post in 1-2 relevant Facebook groups (homeschool, Montessori)
  • Ask 3 friends to post a review after they buy

This first burst of sales is what signals Amazon that there's demand.

Realistic expectations

  • Week 1-2: 0-5 sales unless you have a list
  • Month 1: 10-30 sales if your cover is decent
  • Month 3+: 30-100/month if you maintain Pinterest activity

Your second and third book will always do better than your first — because you'll have data on what converts.

What to do next

Ship book two. Different niche, same system. A portfolio of 5-10 books earning $200-500/month is way more achievable than one "hit" book earning $5K.
